The Indy Hunger Network (IHN) is a coalition of representatives from leading anti-hunger organizations, both public and private, as well as community volunteers. Every year, IHN partners with the Corporation for National and Community Service to sponsor several AmeriCorps VISTA positions to build capacity within the Indianapolis food system. AmeriCorps VISTAs are Volunteers in Service to America who work within their community to alleviate poverty. Nutrition Program Coordinator Position

Indy Hunger Network is developing creative ways to improve access to food resources for women, infants and children facing food insecurity. Join us to help end hunger in the Greater Indianapolis area! 

Program Description:

Your work with the Indy Hunger Network (IHN) will include helping to market The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to reach more moms and kids; working with  low-income health clinics to reduce food insecurity in infants and their parents; working with a low-income apartment complex to help residents access food resources;  and collecting data on WIC and SNAP participation rates and changes over time.  IHN is a coalition of hunger relief agencies working to ensure that anyone who is hungry can get the food they need. 

While all projects provide an opportunity to work collaboratively with food assistance professionals, most time is spent working independently. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, disciplined, thinks creatively and exhibits strong communication and interpersonal skills.   

The VISTA will have the opportunity to build an extensive network, gain valuable professional experience, and gain a deep understanding of both public and private agencies. The position also offers:

Cooking Matters Coordinator Position 

Cooking Matters classes teach low-income adults cooking skills, recipes, and nutrition. Learn program coordination and volunteer management skills to help end hunger in the Indianapolis area! 

Program Description:

Two VISTAs will coordinate community-based cooking education classes (Cooking Matters curriculum) at existing class sites in Indianapolis and expand the program to new locations. This is a project of Indy Hunger Network (IHN), a coalition of hunger relief agencies working to ensure that anyone who is hungry can get the food they need.

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about hunger relief, love to cook, believe in the power of hands-on learning to change lives, possess exceptional attention to detail, and demonstrate compassion and empathy with people from all walks of life.    

The VISTAs will have opportunities to grow as professionals, including working in a traditional office environment, coordinating classes from start to finish, and networking both within Gleaners Food Bank and the greater hunger-relief community. The opportunity to witness lives changing while at the same time being able to document those changes quantitatively is a unique and particularly valuable aspect of this professional experience. CICOA - Meals and More - VISTA Health and Wellness Coordinator

Meals and More provides seniors nutritional meals at neighborhood meal sites and through home delivery. Your outreach to non English speaking seniors will help us feed more meals to more seniors! 

Program Description:

In this role, you will help expand the Meals and More Program, a service that provides nutritional meals at neighborhood meal sites and through home delivery. Meals & More is a program of CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions, the local area agency on aging that also houses the regional Aging & Disability Resource Center.

By reaching new audiences and increasing nutritional programming, you will help us serve more meals to more seniors! You will break down language barriers with non English speaking populations, introduce fun nutrition programming, and help us expand into nearby underserved counties. We need someone who is passionate about improving seniors’ food security, wants to learn to develop new programs, and exhibits compassion and enthusiasm when interacting with non English speakers. While not required, an ideal candidate would be bilingual in Russian or Burmese.

By the end of the term of service, you will have gained invaluable experience in program planning and implementation and will have significant connections in Indianapolis’ international community. The position also offers:

• Camaraderie with 7 other VISTAs working under the Indy Hunger Network umbrella
• Team engagement activities, including bi-weekly meetings to discuss projects, socialize, and hear from guest presenters (includes free lunch!)
• Mentoring, one-on-one coaching, and professional development trainings
• Assistance preparing for life after VISTA (resume review, interview prep, etc.)
• Opportunities to work with leaders in the hunger relief space, including current and retired corporate executives and non-profit agency heads
• Opportunities to work independently and lead on projects

CICOA is located on the north side of Indianapolis, with easy access to shopping, downtown, and the popular village of Broad Ripple. Indianapolis is easy to navigate, has a growing indie restaurant/craft beer/coffee scene, a vibrant arts community, and lots of places to play and recreate!

In this role, you will help expand the reach and nutrition education portion of the Meals and More program.

Responsibilities include:

• Outreach to non English speaking seniors to identify and address barriers that prevent them from participating in the neighborhood and home delivery meal programs
• Translating program materials and marketing (Russian or Burmese)
• Exploring and developing emergency food options for seniors in need
• Introducing Nutritional BINGO and Walk with Ease nutrition programming at neighborhood meal sites
• Assisting with the expansion of Meals and More into surrounding counties

Second Helpings – Marketing and Design Specialist VISTA

Second Helpings turns donated food into meals for thousands of hungry children and adults every day. Use your marketing and design skills to share our mission and attract donors in fresh, new ways!

Program Description:

Second Helpings is seeking a talented, Marketing and Communications graduate with strong design, analytics and communications skills. With its innovative and award-winning programs, Second Helpings accepts donated perishable and overstocked food to prepare nutritious meals for thousands of hungry children and adults every day. We also train unemployed and underemployed adults for meaningful careers in the culinary industry.

Preference will be given to a candidate with proficient InDesign, Photoshop, and HTML. skills. Beyond any technical skill, the VISTA should display strong communications skills and enjoy working in a team atmosphere with the ability to work independently and maintain a strong sense of self-motivation.

It’s not enough to just have a great mission and great programs. Your work will help to share that mission and attract supporters in new and dynamic ways, and will last well after your service term ends! The position also offers:

• Analyze current marketing and communications materials to gain a feel for our history and mission.
• Work alongside the Marketing & Communications Manager to refresh our branding, digital and physical communications, donor stewardship, event marketing, website and more.
• Create engaging visuals for marketing materials and website that can be updated by staff after the term of the VISTA service.
• Work with programs staff to identify communications and marketing needs
• Gain experience with design and execution of direct mail, newsletters, promotional materials and more.
