Cooking Matters

Indy Hunger Network’s Cooking Matters program teaches participants how to make healthy, nutritious, and affordable meals, and how to use nutrition information to make healthier choices. Participants engage in an evidence-based, hands-on, cooking demonstration. Cooking Matters is free to participants and to host sites in Marion County. Our Cooking Matters staff bring their mobile kitchens to community centers, churches, food pantries, WIC clinics, and other locations throughout Indianapolis for in-person classes. In each course, participants cook a healthy meal together, learning both hands-on cooking skills and learning about specific nutrition concepts. Participants eat the meal together, and leave with the ingredients needed to make the same meal at home with their own families. In our virtual classes, participants are sent ingredients directly to their homes and can follow along with the instructor in real time. If you’re interested in volunteering with or joining a Cooking Matters Course, contact us.

Food Drop

When a load of unsellable, yet edible food is rejected due to logistical errors or imperfections, truck drivers must dispose of it. However, with Food Drop, rejected loads can be accepted 24/7, and drivers receive tax-deductible receipts for their donations. All donated food goes to hunger relief organizations supporting food-insecure households in Indiana. Our team is currently working to transfer our Food Drop program to Society of St. Andrew for long-term ownership.

Food Pantry Network

Indy Hunger Network provides training and networking opportunities for the 210+ food pantries in Indianapolis. Our focus is on helping existing pantries collaborate with other pantries, increase their effectiveness, and adopt best practices. We do this through convening quarterly coalition group meetings, organizing an annual Food Pantry Summit, offering nutrition-related assistance through the Healthy Nudges Program, making small grants available through an annual Grant Program for Food Pantries, and compiling relevant information on pantry operations through the Manual of Best Practices for Food Pantries.
